The renowned Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha, known for hosting numerous ODIs and Test matches, is set to undergo demolition to make way for a larger cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 60,000.
Sanjay Behera, the secretary of the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA), stated that the need for an integrated project and an increase in seating capacity is driving the decision to replace the current stadium. Behera added that renovation work is imperative, and the plan is to boost the seating capacity to 60,000.
The foundation stone for this development is scheduled to be laid on February 27, with work commencing shortly afterward. Behera assured that certain heritage structures within the stadium will be preserved.
5T chairman VK Pandian recently visited the Barabati Stadium and discussed plans for the development with OCA president Pranab Prakash Das and other officials. The revamped area is expected to transform into a world-class sports campus, adhering to international standards with amenities such as parking, galleries, food courts, and washrooms. The campus will also accommodate facilities for various sports disciplines.
Additionally, the space adjacent to the stadium will be utilized for a retail mall, a five-star hotel, and office spaces. The front area of the stadium is earmarked for development as a public plaza.
Built in 1952, Barabati Stadium is one of India’s oldest sports venues, named after the historic Barabati fort located nearby. Over the years, it has hosted significant cricket events, including its first international match in 1982 and World Cup matches in 1987 and 1996. India has played 11 ODIs at this venue, winning seven and losing the rest.
